First Photo of Captured Gaddafi Covered in Blood, Libya's PM Confirms Colonel's Death


Al Jazeera has acquired exclusive footage of the body of Muammar Gaddafi after he was killed in his hometown, Sirte. Abdul Hafiz Ghoga, vice chairman of Libya's National Transitional Council, confirmed that the ousted leader had been killed on October 20, 2011 near Sirte.

Update (8 AM Pacific Time, 20 October):

"We have been waiting for this moment for a long time. Muammar Gaddafi has been killed," Libyan Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril was quoted saying by Associated Press at the press conference in Tripoli Thursday afternoon.

The BBC reported several NTC’s leaders confirmed the information on national TV stations, as images of Gaddafi’s body were shown. At the same time, Al Jazeera said the remains of the former leader were placed in a mosque in Misrata.
