Evelyn Lauder: the creator of breast cancer’s pink ribbon passes away

The woman behind the pink ribbon movement for breast cancer awareness passed away at the age of 75 Evelyn Lauder, the woman behind the ever famous pink ribbon campaign for breast cancer died on Wednesday, leaving behind a legacy which has helped millions of people worldwide. According to reports, Lauder died on Saturday at her Manhattan home from complications of nongenetic ovarian cancer.

The pink ribbon campaign for breast cancer has helped women by reminding them to get their breast examination done regularly so that chances of death by cancer can be reduced. If breast cancer is detected in its early stages, then it can be controlled but for that it is necessary that women get their physical breast examination done regularly.

Evelyn Lauder was a long standing executive at cosmetics giant Estee Lauder Cos., which is a company known for their top-of-the-line cosmetics. Estee Lauder was founded by Evelyn’s mother-in-law and she started working there when the company was still in its infant stages.

In 1992, Evelyn Lauder worked with her friend Alexandra Penney, who was the former editor-in-chief of Self magazine and both of them created the pink ribbon campaign for breast cancer awareness. The intention behind the movement was just to remind people with the help of this small pink ribbon, to get their breast examination done. The financing of these ribbons was done by Evelyn and her husband Leonard Lauder, and both of them used to give out free pink ribbons to women who used to shop at their stores.

The small-time effort grew out into a full-scale campaign in which there were fundraising products, $330 million in donations and the designation of October as the Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Out of the donation amount of $330 million, $50 million were donated by Estee Lauder. Evelyn Lauder also started the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and later Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City was started in 2009 with the help of the donation money.

Initially when the pink ribbon campaign for breast cancer awareness started, very few people knew about it. Some even confused it with the campaign for AIDS awareness but later the pink ribbon campaign became so famous that everyone got to know about its meaning and purpose. The funeral services of Evelyn Lauder will be held later with friends and family present at the services.
