HOLLYWOOD BOX OFFICE REPORT (DECEMBER 12, 2011)

This week’ top ten has been the slowest of the year. There is a new number one but it didn’t fare well to expectation.

New Year’s Eve opened at number 1 with $ 13.7 million. You might think that’s a huge sum but is only half the amount of what was expected of it. Also it is only a quarter of Valentine’s Day opening. In second place is Jonah Hill’s The Sitter. The film didn’t fare well opening with $10 million.

Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 got third place with $7.9 million. The fun filled Muppets film held tight at fourth place with $7 million. Two films left the chart this week. They were Tower Heist and Puss in Boots.

Next week, we get to see some of this year’s awaited films and the last of 2011’s big budget movies. Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows will be competing with Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. Also opening only in IMAX is Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.
