The music legend has been dead just 10 days, and her belongings including a black velvet dress and a pair of earrings she wore in Bodyguard will be sold to the highest bidder next month.
Celebrity auctioneer, Darren Julien acquired the singer’s possessions soon after her death on Feb 11th, and will include the items in the Hollywood legend’s auction which is going to take place on 31st March and 1st April. The singer’s floor length dress is valued at $1000 initially, while her pearl earrings and a vest she wore in Bodyguard will be held for $600 and $400 respectively. Though these are the initial valuations, the price is likely to go higher once the bidding starts.
When questioned over the fact that it’s hardly been a week since Houston died, and its too soon for auctioning her possessions, Julien said "It's a celebration of her life," Julien said. "If you hide these things in fear that you're going to offend someone — her life is to be celebrated. These items are historic now that she passed. They become a part of history. They should be in museums. She's lived a life and had a career that nobody else has ever had."
Houston is "someone who's going to maintain collectability," he said. "For people who are fans of Whitney Houston and never would have had a chance to meet her and never got to talk to her, these are items that literally touched a part of her life. They are a way to relate to her or be a part of her life without having known her."
The auction will also include items form a long planned celebrity memorabilia for instance Charlie Chaplin’s stick, Clark Gable’s jacket from ‘Gone with the Wind’ and Charlton Heston’s staff from the ‘10 Commandments’. Julien said that such items are a kind of investment, with you needs to buy and sell at the right time, just like stocks.
Those fans and collectors, who cannot attend the auction in person, can bid online or via phone on the days the auction will be held. A free exhibition will begin on March 19th, only a few blocks away from the Beverley Hills Hotel where Houston died.
Bodyguard star, Kevin CostnerKevin Costner said that no women could have ever played the character Houston did in the movie, and auctioning some of her possession form Bodyguard will at least let the highest bidder acquire a part of Houston’s life.
