UK DEPORTS 120 NIGERIANS

The United Kingdom on Friday deported 120 Nigerians for various immigration offences. The deportees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, aboard a chartered aircraft.

Airport sources said the first batch of the deportees had arrived in the early hours of the day, while the second batch arrived later in the evening. Immigration sources said a total of 120 Nigerians were sent back into the country on Friday.

According to them, the deportees were mainly young men and women. The deportees, mainly young men and women, were said to have narrated their ordeal in the UK to some airport workers.

It was learnt that scores of airport workers accosted the deportees to ask them about their experiences in the UK. An immigration official, on the condition of anonymity, said the deportees were sent back to Nigeria for overstaying in their host country.

He, however, said the deportees had been allowed to go after passing through the necessary immigration process at the airport. An airport official at the scene told our correspondent in a telephone interview that some of the deportees carried their luggage in ‘Ghana Must Go’ bags.

They were said to have rushed out of the airport for fear of being seen by people. A security source said the deportees arrived aboard a chartered cargo jet.

DEPORTATION OF 67 SOUTH AFRICAN PROSTITUTES FROM NIGERIA, A GOOD MOVE?

The diplomatic war between the governments of South Africa and Nigeria seems not to end soon, as Nigeria has concluded plans to deport another set South Africans from Nigeria barely some hours after the first batch comprising 56 South Africans.

The latest victims are about 67 prostitutes of South African origin. According to Nigerian government, the 67 South African prostitutes are in an employment of a high profile South African businessman, who use their services in Lagos and Abuja. They are due for deportation after being believed to be HIV positive.

Just last week, South African government deported about 125 Nigerians on the basis of having fake Yellow Fever Card, a development Nigerian government described as a slap and a Xenophobic attack on Nigerians.

The Nigerian government reminded South African government of how she helped in fighting for them during the apartheid period, saying she doesn't deserve such treatment from South Africa.

NEW BOKO HARAM LEADER DARES JONATHAN; JUSTIFIES KILLING OF CHRISTIANS

The leader of radical Islamist sect, Boko Haram has challenged the authority of Nigeria’s president, Goodluck Jonathan in a rare online video, vowing more attacks in a nation increasingly overcome by unrest and divided by religion. Imam Abubakar Shekau said recent killings of Christians were justifiable revenge attacks and President Goodluck Jonathan had no power to stop the group’s insurgency, in the first video of him posted online, according to Reuters.

The 15 minute video of Abubakar Shekau posted on YouTube is similar in style to messages submitted by other Islamist groups like al Qaeda, a sign of the growing influence other jihadist movements are having on the sect. Boko Haram, whose name translates from the northern Hausa language as “Western education is sinful”, has been behind almost daily killings in its home base in the largely Muslim northeast, most recently targeting Christians.

“Christians, everyone knows what they have done to us and Muslims … we were attacked and we decided to defend ourselves and, because we were on the right path, Allah has made us stronger,” Shekau says in Hausa, sat in front of two Kalashnikov rifles and wearing a camouflage bullet proof jacket.

“Jonathan, (you) know full well that this thing is beyond your powers,” he added, referring to the president. Shekau is understood to have taken over control of Boko Haram, which wants sharia law more widely applied across Africa’s most populous nation, after the sect’s founder

Boko Haram’s attacks began small scale – usually drive-by shootings on authority figures or drinking joints in their home town of Maiduguri, in the country’s remote northeast corner – but lately have become increasingly sophisticated and ambitious. In August last year, the sect carried out a suicide car bombing of the United Nations headquarters in the capital Abuja that killed 24 people. On Christmas Day it masterminded coordinated explosions against Christians, including one at St.

Theresa’s Catholic a church near Abuja that killed at least 37 people.The most recent attacks have targeted Christians but dozens of Muslims were killed by the sect last year. “Anyone who attacks us, we will attack him back even if he is a Muslim. We shall kill anyone who works against Islam, even if he is a Muslim,” Shekau said in the online tape.

Gunmen shot dead four people at a petrol station on Wednesday in the northeast Nigerian town of Potiskum, where on Tuesday suspected members of Boko Haram shot dead eight people. Boko Haram’s increasingly violent insurgency has become a major security problem for

Jonathan’s administration, also facing pressure from nationwide strikes and protests against fuel price increases. “Four people were shot dead yesterday but I cannot confirm whether the attackers were  Boko Haram,” said Tanko Lawal, police commander in Yobe state. Yobe’s government said on Wednesday it has banned the use of motorbikes, which have often been used in Boko Haram attacks, in volatile areas of the state.

NOLLYWOOD DIVIDED OVER FUEL SUBSIDY REMOVAL

Nollywood practitioners seem divided over the recent removal of fuel subsidy by the present administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.

The division came to the fore on Tuesday after aggrieved stakeholders under the aegis of the Association of Nollywood Core Producers(ANCOP) addressed the press, while disowning the earlier position allegedly taken by the Segun Arinze-led faction of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), as they resolved to throw their weight behind the government on the removal of the controversial fuel subsidy.

Arinze’s faction of AGN organised a “Nollywood Roundtable on Deregulation” held on Friday, December 30, at Eko Hotel and Suites to drum support for the federal goverment regarding the removing of the fuel subsidy.

But reacting to the ugly development at a press conference on Tuesday, in Lagos, president of ANCOP, Mr Alex Eyengho condemned the action of the Arinze’s faction of AGN, stating categorically that their position did not in any way represent the collective opinion of the entire Nollywood practitioners.

According to him, the fuel subsidy removal is anti-masses as there is no way the industry would pitch its tent against the Nigerian masses in favour of the government of the day.

His words, “after painstaking consultations by ANCOP with various stakeholders in Nollywood on this disgraceful act of Segun Arinze and co, and as a result of the abrupt removal of the fuel subsidy by the Federal Government of Nigeria under the leadership of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, it was resolved, and we hereby state categorically that the Nigerian movie industry popularly called Nollywood, rejects in its entirety the fuel subsidy removal by President Jonathan.

The act is anti-masses and there is no way Nollywood would pitch its tent against the Nigerian masses in favour of a wicked cabal who have resolved to further pauperize the Nigerian masses.”

“We align ourselves absolutely with the position of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and all other progressives on this matter. We shall mobilize for, and key into legitimate protests organized by the nation’s labour movement in days and weeks ahead.

We use this opportunity to call on all Nollywood stakeholders across the country to identify with the organized labour in their respective states. It is clear that the fuel subsidy removal is indeed injurious to citizens of this country and the country itself. Nollywood can never, ever, ever endorse this pain-inducing policy of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan targeted at the Nigerian masses with a view to further impoverishing them.”

Also, sultry actress Genevieve Nnaji who happened to be one of the recent beneficiaries of National Honours by the present government has expressed worries over the fuel subsidy removal, stating that “I still can’t help but feel that fuel subsidy removal is the right move at the wrong time.”

She said 44% have mild/moderate obesity while 16% are malnourished.

Iquo advised parents to create time for their children by providing healthy diet for them and not just giving them money which the children will only use to buy junk which cannot guarantee their health. She said parents should endeavour to build the children to a healthy adulthood who will in-turn take care of them at old age.

THE LAGOS NEW NUMBER PLATES IS NOW OFFICIALLY AVAILABLE

No Going Back On New Number Plates, Licence – Chidoka. The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Osita Chidoka, has disclosed that the new plate number project would go on. This acme just as he revealed that it was the states that would sell the new number plates to individuals and not the FRSC. He noted that such states have the number plates in large quantity.

The corps marshal said this while fielding questions from newsmen in Abuja at the end of the commission’s 2011 annual lecture series on Wednesday in which he advised Nigerians to go to the Boards of Internal Revenue of their states to make the payment and that with their receipt they could go and buy the plates from their states.

“The only place where l know that we are experiencing slight delay is on the verification of individuals, because we want to make sure that we know those that are registering these vehicles and we insist that this process must be completed.

“We must verify your insurance and we must verify your Identity before we finally give you the Proof of Ownership to the Vehicle,” he stated. Responding to the order by the House of Representative to stop the new number plates and licences, Chidoka said that he had not received the proceedings of the House.

He, however, encouraged Nigerians to come out en masse for the verification, pointing at the security challenges in the country. “We cannot afford a situation whereby a vehicle will knock down a person and we cannot trace the vehicle, because, without the number plate, we cannot know nor trace the vehicle owner and we want to put this kind of occurrence behind us,” he explained.

Plane with 500 pilgrims crash lands in Kano

A Yola bound Boeing 747 Jumbo jet belonging to Max Air yesterday had a burst tyre during an emergency landing in Kano, with 500 passengers returning from Hajj escaping death. The plane, with registration No 5N-DBM, narrowly escaped crashing while landing at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, but it was learnt that none of the passengers was injured.

An eyewitness told Daily Trust that the Yola bound plane made an emergency landing by 3.00am local time adding that the pilot manoeuvred the plane to a halt. Daily Trust gathered that immediately the passenger alighted from the plane, they prostrated at the tarmac to show their appreciation to Allah for surviving the incident.

When contacted, Media Consultant to the Airline, Dahiru Ibrahim, confirmed the incident. He said, “the aircraft lost four tyres while landing at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport but I want to state clearly that it was not an emergency landing as was speculated in some quarters.The pilot decided to land at the Kano airport because airplanes cannot land at night at Yola Airport where passengers would have been flown to their base in Yola in a broad day light.”

Drug Scandal: I was chained like a criminal – Nollywood actor Baba Suwe

Yesterday in Lagos, Nollywood actor Baba Suwe recounted his ordeals in the hands NDLEA, The actor, real name Babatunde Omidina, during a press conference, told of how he was chained like a deadly criminal. He also told of how he was humiliated in every way possible as the agency tried to find drugs in his body.

Suwe, who was there with his lawyers  Mr. Bamidele Aturu  and Mr Adindu Ogwuzor, said  his arrest was already ordered by people in power even before he arrived at the airport, because the moment he was sited at the airport, he was told to report to the office of the NDLEA, even before he was tested.

He noted that some powerful people must have instructed the NDLEA to ensure he was properly and publicly humiliated, because he was chained in the legs like a dangerous criminal before he was placed in front of a scanner. It’ll be recalled that the actor was later released after spending 24 days in the custody of the agency, and after the entire world closely followed his 25 bowel movements.

President Goodluck Jonathan: 'Boko Haram ‘ll fade away soon'

President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, described the terrorist attacks by the Boko Haram Islamic sect as “a temporary setback” which will soon be a thing of the past. This came on the heels of the nation’s quest for direct foreign investment which is the high point of the 2011 Economic summit.

Speaking at the on-going 17th Nigeria Economic Summit, NES 17, in Abuja, President Jonathan said that his administration was acquiring and deploying all necessgoary security infrastructure to defeat the sect in order to make the nation an investors’ haven in her quest to be a key global economic power.

His words: “We are working very hard to provide a conducive atmosphere for investors. Although we currently have the Boko Haram problem, just like terrorist activities in other parts of the globe, but I can assure Nigerians and the global community that we will soon overcome. All those involved in 2010 Independence Day attacks have been arrested. We admit that our primary responsibility is to provide security and we are working on it. Book Haram is a temporary setback.

NIGERIA IN ANOTHER SHOW OF SHAME

The smooth conduct of the 17th Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) in Abuja was yesterday disrupted for more than 30 minutes following power outage at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel plant, which sparked a melee as the audience thought a terror attack was under way.

The development forced some dignitaries, including the United States (U.S.) Envoy to Nigeria, Ambassador Terence P. McCulley, to hurriedly flee the hotel despite being scheduled to address the media at the end of the session, which was cut short by the power outage.

President Goodluck Jonathan had declared the summit open with a speech and had left the venue before the power cut. However, the hotel’s Public Relations Manager, Sola Adeyemo, attributed the outage to “a very high voltage” from the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) forcing the hotel’s power generator to switch off.

But by the time power was restored some dignitaries, including the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Lamido Sanusi, who were discussants at the interrupted session were gone.

The discussions however resumed after much persuasion of delegates who later gained their composure and used the blackout period to help themselves to snacks and tea served at the fountain arena outside the congress hall.

Baba Suwe's Lawyer to sue Nigerian Government

LAGOS, Nigeria, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- A lawyer for a comic actor in Nigeria said he will sue government authorities for holding the actor 24 days after his arrest on drug-trafficking suspicion.

Babatunde Omidina, who is known as the comedian Baba Suwe, was arrested Oct. 12 at Murtala Mohammed International Airport after a body scan showed what looked like drugs in his stomach. But the BBC reported the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency admitted he had failed to excrete any drugs and he was released in Lagos.

His lawyer, Bamidele Aturu, told Vanguard Saturday he would seek monetary damages in the suit. "Citizens' rights are inviolable. Therefore those in authority must do everything not to abridge or violate the right of the Nigerian citizen," Aturu said.

He said the agency had shown contempt for the country's laws. "They kept him for 24 days without getting any evidence and that in itself constitutes a very gross violation of our constitution," Aturu said. "You can't arrest a person for this long period without evidence."

Omidina acts in English and Yoruba language films, often playing a befuddled butler or security guard.
