Vanquishing all competition at the box-office this week-end, the most expensive 3D movie 'Immortals' hit the top spot locally grossing an estimated $68 million world wide. The 3D action flick's performance surpassed all box-office expectations. It overtook two strong contenders - Adam Sandler latest comedy 'Jack and Jill' and the animated movie 'Puss in Boots,' as per studio estimates released here on Sunday, Nov.13, 2011.
Presiding over the domestic charts, 'Immortals' produced at a cost of $75 million, raked in $32 million in sales from US and Canadian cinema houses, and an estimated $36 million from foreign markets. The main target audiences for the movie were the young brigades. They seem to have been drawn towards the film narrative comprising of the clashes between ancient Greek warriors, ably essayed by lead actors Henry Cavill and Mickey Rourke.
'Immortals' succeeded in attracting 75% of moviegoers under the age of 35 years, out of which 60% were male audience. While others films made keeping in mind that kind of audience, have been struggling to catch up in recent weeks.
An independent studio - Relativity Media are raking in the ‘moolah’ as they released the film. According to the studio President Kyle Davies, who is in charge of the film’s worldwide theatrical distribution, people were apprehensive about action fans keeping off from cinema halls. However, “They definitely came out in force for 'Immortals,’ he declared. Relativity Media must be definitely a happy lot as the studio had earlier projected opening-weekend domestic sales of only $25 million roughly.
According to CinemaScore an exit-polling firm, movie-goers gave ‘Immortals’ a B rating on an average. Critics meanwhile were divided in their opinion about the film. On Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregating website ‘Immortals’ managed to earn only a 38% positive ranking.
