Vanquishing all competition at the box-office this week-end, the most expensive 3D movie 'Immortals' hit the top spot locally grossing an estimated $68 million world wide. The 3D action flick's performance surpassed all box-office expectations. It overtook two strong contenders - Adam Sandler latest comedy 'Jack and Jill' and the animated movie 'Puss in Boots,' as per studio estimates released here on Sunday, Nov.13, 2011.
Presiding over the domestic charts, 'Immortals' produced at a cost of $75 million, raked in $32 million in sales from US and Canadian cinema houses, and an estimated $36 million from foreign markets. The main target audiences for the movie were the young brigades. They seem to have been drawn towards the film narrative comprising of the clashes between ancient Greek warriors, ably essayed by lead actors Henry Cavill and Mickey Rourke.
'Immortals' succeeded in attracting 75% of moviegoers under the age of 35 years, out of which 60% were male audience. While others films made keeping in mind that kind of audience, have been struggling to catch up in recent weeks.
An independent studio - Relativity Media are raking in the ‘moolah’ as they released the film. According to the studio President Kyle Davies, who is in charge of the film’s worldwide theatrical distribution, people were apprehensive about action fans keeping off from cinema halls. However, “They definitely came out in force for 'Immortals,’ he declared. Relativity Media must be definitely a happy lot as the studio had earlier projected opening-weekend domestic sales of only $25 million roughly.
According to CinemaScore an exit-polling firm, movie-goers gave ‘Immortals’ a B rating on an average. Critics meanwhile were divided in their opinion about the film. On Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregating website ‘Immortals’ managed to earn only a 38% positive ranking.

Oshodi/Isolo LG Boss Deny Sending Thugs To Batter Actor Ayo Badmus
Some days ago, popular actor, Ayo Badmus, alleged that he was battered by thugs guarding the Chairman of Oshodi L.G.A, Hon Bolaji Ariyoh. (If you missed it, read it here). Well, the LG boss, via his media people, are denying they had anything to do with the beating. They claim the actor had a falling out with some men at the event, and it had nothing to do with them.
A press statement from the office of the Oshodi/Isolo Local Government boss below...
The much spread rumor and campaign of calumny issued by a Nollywood actor, AYO BADMUS, on his alleged humiliation and beating, ordered by the OSHODI/ISOLO LOCAL GOVERNMENT Chairman is nothing but a complete ruse fabricated to damage the image of the Honorable Chairman and create some frivolous attention and gain unnecessary sympathy for himself.
More when you continue...
The visionary and hardworking Oshodi/Isolo Chairman is a core fan of our own very Nollywood stars, someone who will never stop to support and promote our culture both at the local and International Level. It is so regrettable to imagine how cheap the actor is going around, spreading fake rumors and claiming to have been badly beaten by some faceless thugs, as ordered by the Chairman's elder brother, a quiet, reserved and friendly fellow at the Chairman's Sallah celebration that attracted the presence of notable Nigerians like GBENGA ADEYINKA 1st and some others who witnessed the occasion and could attest to this truth. We however found it necessary to address the issue and correct whatever ill impression that would have registered in peoples mind and confirming the story as untrue and unfounded.

127 Zimbabwean Women Infected With HIV During Drug Trial
It's not being spread around the media much but the latest news from a Tenofovir trial in Zimbabwe is that 'about' 127 people taking the drug became infected with HIV. The article is not clear but it sounds like this is approximately 20% of those taking part, which is an alarming rate even in a high prevalence country like Zimbabwe.
The trial was for the vaginal gel and cream and oral versions of Tenofovir and the oral use of the drug has now been dropped. A spokesperson for the trial said those who became infected in the Vaginal and Oral Interventions to Control the Epidemic (VOICE) trial "were part of a group that was always at risk of infection", which probably means they were thought to be at risk of sexual transmission. But, as is usual with these trials, it appears to be assumed that all infection is sexual.
The women are said to be sexually active married or single women, which doesn't suggest very high risk. The fact that they live in a high prevalence area simply begs the question of why HIV transmission should be so high there.
It is not clear if the women's partners will be tested and if any attempt will be made to establish exactly how they were infected, for example, if they faced any non-sexual risks. After all, there may be a big difference between the effectiveness of these drugs in preventing sexual and non-sexual transmission. Trial participants may even have faced some risks through the activities of the trial itself. In addition to the 630 Zimbabweans taking part, there were another four thousand from other countries, who now have to be tested to find out how many of them were infected.

AFTERMATH OF BABA SUWE SAGA:NDLEA DRILLS STELLA DAMASUS
This period is indeed a bad one for Nollywood actors and actresses as the men of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) seem to have taken an unusual but targeted interest in them over their alleged drug related offences. First it was Babatunde Omidina popularly known as Baba Suwe and now it is Stella Damasus.
Last week Thursday,10 of November 2011,popular actress Stella Damasus was thoroughly drilled by men of the anti-drug agency over what was suspected to be an attempt by the fair complexioned actress to smuggle drugs suspected to be cocaine to Dubai.
According to our source, the actress was taken into the custody of the NDLEA where she was searched thoroughly in a very rigorous pattern involving series of scans being carried out on her before she was let loose by the men of the agency. Interesting is the fact that Stella Damasus was delayed by the Drug Law Enforcers to the extent that she even missed her flight to Dubai and had to travel on another flight after she had been released.
The actress later twitted” Today I regret being a Nollywood Star” on her Twitter account as friends and fans of the actress questioned her on what could have necessitated the comment. Efforts to reach the actress to comment on the issue proved abortive as at press time,as she was said to be enjoying her holiday in Dubai
